An open meeting was held in Island Cafe on Wednesday 22nd April to allow people to discuss the proposed development at the middle pier and view the plans.

Present; Jules Clarke, Jamie MacLaughlan, John Wheeler James, Archie Sproat, Pat Graham. Angus Kennedy, Kenny Macintyre, Keish Ann Down, John McCann, Fra Macintyre

Points raised;

  • Angus Kennedy described problems encountered when development at miidle pier and old pier was planned during 90's, and warned about the level of beaucracy with council re ownership, finance, insurance, health and safety. Suggested that we investigate carefully before embarking.
  • Archie Sproat asked whether the slip would be adjacent to pier, which was confirmed.
  • Potential problems of cars and trailers being abandoned at middle pier causing an obstruction. Need for clear signage asking people to park vehichles elsewhere.
  • Neil Morrison advised consulting other groups that have been involved with similar developments, ie. Tobermory. John McCann agreed to do that
  • Pat Graham queried whether moving pontoon was part of plan. However this is private property and not currently within project plan.
  • Kenny Macintyre feels that the slip is a good idea but is concerned that the slip will restrict access for the fishing boats, pointed out that they rely on being able to tie up here in rough weather.
  • John McCann pointed out safety benefits to the sailing club and benefits to yachties. He believes a slip will improve access for all.
  • Some discussion as to whether a slip would be better places on the other side of the pier. Fra confirmed that permission had been sought from Crwon Estate for the north side of the pier.
  • In general the development was welcomed by those attending the meeting - Jules and Jamie both offered to assist with forwarding the project.
  • Next stage planninng permission is being sought.

The consultancy which took place in 2006 highlighted a number of areas in the village of Arinagour that could be improved upon. The work is being carried out in phases. The following are in progress:
  • Notice boards in the village have been erected to provide areas where local information can be displayed.
  • The old village water pump has been restored along with the stone wall at its side. There will be a plaque erected explaining the history.
  • There has been a stone walling course which began work on the stone wall going up the School Brae, this is the first part of a project that is aimed at providing a usable path from the bottom of the village to the top
  • SLIPWAY - There have been investigations into the creation of a slipway at the middle pier to aid the launch and landing of boats for both locals and visitors alike. Currently Coll's tiday range makes it difficult and dangerous to launch small craft, and with the advent of Coll's fledgling Sailing Club the need for a Slipway has been further highlighted.The area identified as a potential site for this slipway is the North side of the Middle Pier. The pier would provide safety and shelter from the sea, and the area at the top would be large enough to allow for the maeuvering of trailers.

    Development Coll have recently applied for a Consent 34 which grants permission from the Crown Estates to develop on the shoreline. the next stage is Planning Permission, and looking for grant assistance. Once we have technical drawings there will be an opportunity to meet and discuss the project further
